Apprenticeship Path to a Career

Trevor Thompson registering for the Modified Apprenticeship Program in Truck andCoach in August 2008 (inset). The larger picture shows Trevor (on the right) in his work placement with the City of Toronto (Fleet Maintenance) this past December.

Trevor is thankful for the help he has received from the Ministry (Marieke Vander-Meiden) and SoT staff (Professors Thompson, Dixon and Tamburro) in pursuing his goal of becoming a licensed technician with the City of Toronto. He moved to Scarborough last year because he was interested in studying at
Centennial.

He started with the Con. Ed. Department by taking night courses on Steering, Suspensions and Brakes while being employed during the day at East Spring Service. When he heard about the opportunity to study full time in the Modified Truck and Coach Co-op he did not hesitate to quit his job to pursue full time studies. With a little support from EI and his savings account, Trevor has remained focused upon his goals of continuing to achieve credentials in the Transportation industry.

His professors are receiving very good reports on his field placements. He even volunteered to stay on for an additional three weeks in his placement with the City of Toronto. Trevor is impressed “with the amazing diversity of people and the variety of equipment in the Fleet Maintenance Department.”

We can expect to see Trevor around our campus for some time yet as he continues to build upon his successes by enrolling in full and part-time programs with the School of Transportation. Visit Automotive schools to find more information about your apprenticeship training.

Author writes on Apprenticeship Program and about the placement in automotive field. Apprenticeship can become a career as well in automotive training at automotive schools.

The Ultimate Writing Guide For College

Writing is a critical skill requiring attention and development in college. Effective communication, well-argued papers, and logical, cohesive work are expected and should be every student’s goal. Yet many students arrive in college without having refined this skill: Some have not been in school for many years and need to refresh their abilities. Many more have slipped through high school ignoring the value of writing well. Habits of writing for electronic media, such as text messaging, may further impair the student’s ability and desire to write carefully and thoughtfully. Thus the first step to writing for college is trusting that doing it very well is worthwhile, and that this will become a valuable life skill that will serve students for the rest of their lives.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

Attention to spelling and grammar, with careful proofreading, is absolutely necessary. Students should never ignore the built-in grammar, spelling and punctuation suggestions of most word processing software. It is inexcusable to turn in electronic versions of papers without correcting suggested mistakes. However, this is not enough. Even small errors can change or obscure the meaning of what is written, and these will not necessarily be caught by spelling grammar checkers. For example, homophones (words that sound alike) may be correctly spelled, but be incorrect in their meaning. Correctly spelled words may not be the correct words: Spell check will not notice the difference between Mary Queen of Scots and Mary Queen of Spots.

STRUCTURE AND LOGIC

Good writing requires full paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting evidence. Each paragraph must be linked in a segway to the next, and the overall logic of the composition should be evident. It is very easy to write in a stream-of-consciousness style in a word processing program, but this does not demonstrate sufficient forethought and planning.

CONSISTENCY OF PERSON, NUMBER AND TENSE

Person and Number refer to the nouns, including the subjects and objects, in the written discourse. Most formal writing still is written in third person (he, she, it, they), though much college writing accepts second person (you) as well. Writing employing I, or we is only appropriate for assignments that specifically ask for a personal perspective (such as journals) or for fiction. Consistency means using the same person and number within any sentence or paragraph.

Tense refers to verbs. Generally consistency should be maintained in writing about the past, present or future. However, there are certain kinds of constructions that require changes in tense, particularly sentences beginning with the word, if. It is important to be clear and consistent about the flow of time expressed by verbs in a composition.

DIRECTIONS

Directions for written assignments are like recipes: follow the directions and the assignment will come out the way it is expected. Ignore the instructions, or simply miss an ingredient, and the assignment is likely to flop. College writing instructions often refer to a particular manual of style, so it is important to know what that is and either own a copy of that manual or know how to access it on line. Directions often provide the amount and type of research that must be demonstrated as well as the required sections of the work. Students must make sure they understand the requirements: it is far better to ask about the directions than to turn in shoddy work.

PLAGIARISM

Most schools and many professors have zero tolerance for plagiarism, cheating, and unfair copying of material for assignments. Since the internet provides many ways of testing student work for copying, it is not worth the risk of punishment. Beyond the question of punishment, though, there is the problem of wasting money on an education that is neither fully engaged nor honestly pursued. The student who gets away with buying a paper, turning in redundant work, or copying and pasting is the one who actually comes up empty in the long run.

Article Writing 101. 6 Secrets the Pros Are Using!

One of the most effective ways to get the word out about your internet business is article writing. It's extremely inexpensive and it's been a marketing mainstay in the online community for a decade or so now. It will continue to be a powerful marketing force for the foreseeable future.

There are right ways and wrong ways to write your articles, however. Too many budding entrepreneuers will write a dozen or so articles without a clue as to the methods and tactics used in successful and marketable writing. As a result, they can fall by the wayside and allow the most experienced among us take the hotspots and enjoy a high level of traffic.

There are many experienced home based businesspeople who will say without a doubt that article writing is an old and ineffective method of getting the word out about your business. With utter confidence and plenty of evidence to the contrary, I must say these naysayers are very wrong! Article writing still remains king, but doing it correctly and with competence will determine how successful you are.

Here are a few strategies to ensure success at writing effective articles:

1. Know your audience. Your audience will respond to you if you know how to communicate with them. It's an age-old strategy: see eye-to-eye to those with whom you want to do business, and they will respond in kind. Understand who your target audience is and what they understand and reap the rewards.

2. Know your product. If you are selling something that requires even a little technical knowledge, then your audience will know if you know jack about it! Exercise due diligence like successful entrepreneuers do. Knowing your product and all it's angles will provide you with the competence your audience will expect from you.

3. Make sure your grammar and spelling are up to par. Surprisingly, too many marketing writers forget this all important idea. With all the word processing equipment that is widely available to us, it's easy to understand why we are so laid back about it. Always double check your article for spelling and grammatical errors because your world-class word processing technology doesn't catch everything.

4. Be a good study and learn what you can about the best marketing writing techniques. There are too many ideas for this article alone, but there is so much free information regarding buzz words and word strategies that can be used to your advantage.

5. Write regularly. Being an effective writer takes practice and diligence. Like many of my colleagues, I wrote an article a day for my first month of business. Submit your articles on a regular basis as opposed to bulk submitting. This keeps your head in the game for a sustained period. Think of it as a marathon, you're not sprinting.

6. Read other articles and see what makes them so successful. Keep your eye out for trends. Be keen on how the most effective article writers ply their trade and copy the methods of the most successful ones.

It's as easy to mess it up as it is to get it right. Effective article writing can be your ticket to onlne success if you keep at it. Don't look at this as being the old way of doing things. See it as a time-testing method of generating more business to your website.

How To Go About Writing Your autobiographical essay

When you look at the whole part of writing an e-book, it looks like an impossible thing to do. The hardest part of writing is the first sentence. If you concentrate on breaking your autobiographical essay into sections it won't seem quite as daunting.

Think of writing an e-book like climbing a mountain. You stand at the foot of the mountain wondering how you are ever going to reach the top. There is only one way to accomplish this, one step at a time.

Think of writing your e-book in the same manner. You must create it step by step, and one day, you will take that last step and find yourself standing on top of that mountain.

The first thing you have to do, as if you actually were a mountain climber, is to get completely organized. Unlike a mountain climber who would be organizing gear, you as the writer will be organizing your thoughts.

Once you have completed each step, you will be read to actually begin writing your narrative essay.

The first thing you need to determine is the title. Write down several ideas and one of them will reach out and grab you. The title will help you focus on writing your topics; it will serve as a guide to ask and answer your readers' questions.

Try to use a clever title since this helps to sell, however avoid the too cute. A good example might be: "Stop Being A Couch Potato, Five Exercise Plans That Whip You Into Shape".

Then you want to write out a thesis statement. The thesis statement is simply a sentence or two exactly describing the problem or question your book is addressing and how your book will solve that problem.

The chapters of your e-book will be formed by your thesis statement. Once your thesis statement is completed, you have a foundation for the rest of your e-book. From these two little sentences your e-book will grow chapter by chapter.

It is important to stay focused on your thesis statement, as each chapter must support the thesis statement. If your thesis statement cannot be support in the chapters, you need to change the thesis statement or drop the chapter.

For example: your thesis statement might read: Do you have the couch potato blues? Get yourself back in shape with these five exercises that will build your energy.

Once you have your thesis, before you actually start to write, make sure there is a good reason to writer your book. Ask your some simple questions:

*Does your book present useful information and is that
information currently relevant?

*Will your book positively affect the lives of your readers?

*Is your book vibrant and will it keep the readers attention?

*Does your book answer questions that are meaningful and significant to your readers?

Be being able to answer yes to all of these questions, you should be pretty confident that you have an e-book that will be interesting to others.

Another important step is to figure out who your target audience is. It is this group that you will be writing to, and this group will dictate many elements of your book, such as the style, tone, diction, and even the length.

What is the age range of your readers, their general gender, what are they most interest in, and even the socioeconomic group they come from are all questions you need to ask yourself in order to be able to target the correct market.

The more you can list about your target market, the easier it will be to define and determine your target market.

What is the reason you are writing your e-book? Is it to promote your business? Enhance your reputation? Bring quality traffic to your website?

What are your goals in terms of publishing? Do you want to sell it as a product on your website, or do you want to offer it as a free gift for filling out a newsletter opt-in form or for ordering a product?

Are you interested in using each chapter as an e-course or to attract affiliates?

These are important concepts to consider. The more you are upfront before writing your e-book, the easier it will be to complete.

Making your e-book user friendly is vital to the success of your e-book. Keep your formatting in your chapters fairly consistent, especially if your book is non-fiction.

The trick to a successful e-book is to keep it engaging for the reader. Anecdotes, testimonials, short stories, photos, graphs, tips and techniques will keep the reader turning your pages.

Write in a conversational tone rather than a formal tone such as what you would find in a text book. Using sidebars are very useful for quick reference and they help to break up the density of the page.

Practice makes perfect and writing is no different. Good writing takes practice. The art of writing is a life process; the more you write and read, the better your writing will become.

The better your writing becomes the bigger your sales will be. It is a good idea to read books, magazines and articles on writing and when you see a tip that jumps out at you, write it down for reference.

E-books that are read from a computer screen are sometimes difficult to read. Keep this in mind when you are creating your e-Book. Provide a lot of white space in between the paragraphs.

If your pages are too dense, your readers will not finish your book because it is draining on the eyes.

Break up your paragraphs by using bulleted list and numbered lists. This will provide information that is easy to absorb for your reader and gives the reader a break from dissecting your paragraphs.

The font can make the success of your e-book. Utilize a font that is very easy on the eyes and stick with that font family. Using dozens of different fonts to make your pages "pretty" will only tire your readers before they past the first page.

Use spacing of at least one and a half and a font that is large enough to read on the screen, but small enough that the whole page fits on a computer screen.

This will take some testing, but it is well worth the efforts. Another thing that is so important and so overlooked is spelling and grammar errors. Don't mess up a great book because you didn't take the time to utilize spell and grammar check.

Now you have finished a book. Publish your e-book and wait for the download requests to come pouring in.
